The Rowans Tenpin Bowl

The Rowans Tenpin Bowl is a century-old, American retro-style 10-pin bowling venue on Stroud Green Road in Finsbury Park, London. Despite the continuous, unprecedented gentrification around it, this old bowling venue still boasts its kitsch, classic interiors that remind one of the late 80s and early 90s.

And with over a century in existence, Rowans Tenpin Bowl has been a source of entertainment to multiple generations of Londoners and continues to attract hordes of bowling enthusiasts’ from all over the country.

Here’s an overview of its history and fun activities to try.

About the Rowans Tenpin Bowl

Long before the Rowan Tenpin Bowl was established, its venue was an old tram depot. The depot was then converted into one of the largest cinemas in the country during the 1920s. It was pretty popular among young soldiers who’d come in loaded only to gamble away all their hard-earned money. As a result, it wasn’t long before public complaints of rowdy behaviour began pouring in, leading to the cinema’s shut down.

The building reopened as a dance hall in the 60s and became so popular it attracted international artists and bands like the Beatles. In the early 80s, it was a bingo hall and briefly ran a health club before Bowling was introduced in 1989.

Bowling was a smart move as its today one of the main attractions in the venue. The Rowans Tenpin Bowl is also considered one of the largest bowling venues in the country. Its name is a derivative of John Rowan Bookmarkers, a betting shop once owned by the building’s original owners.
